Shankarpur Beach

Bengal's Quiet Shore — Fishing Boats, Fresh Catch & Untouched Sand

Shankarpur is a small, serene fishing village on the Bay of Bengal in East Midnapore district, West Bengal, located 12 km from Digha and 6 km from Mandarmani. Far less commercialised than its neighbours, Shankarpur offers an authentic glimpse into the life of Bengali coastal fishing communities alongside a wide, clean beach with minimal crowds — making it the preferred choice for travellers seeking genuine coastal peace.

About Shankarpur

A Living Fishing Village

Unlike resort beaches, Shankarpur is a working fishing harbour where colourful wooden trawlers depart before dawn and return at noon with the day's catch. The morning fish auction on the beach is a fascinating slice of coastal Bengali life that most tourists completely miss at busier destinations.

Shankarpur Fisheries Jetty

Shankarpur houses one of the largest mechanised fishing jetties in West Bengal. The jetty handles significant fish landings of pomfret, hilsa, and tiger prawns from the Bay of Bengal — supplying fish markets across Kolkata and eastern India from this modest coastal settlement.

Pine & Casuarina Forests

The beachfront at Shankarpur is backed by dense casuarina and pine plantations maintained by the Forest Department, creating a natural windbreak and a shaded walkway along the shore. These forests are home to migratory birds during winter, adding a birdwatching dimension to the beach experience.

Fresh Seafood & Local Experience

Shankarpur's greatest draw is its ultra-fresh seafood — caught at dawn and served by noon at small village dhabas near the beach. Hilsa fish curry, prawn malaikari, and crab cooked in mustard paste are local specialties unavailable in this freshness anywhere else. Many visitors make a day-trip from Digha solely to eat at Shankarpur's fish stalls and watch the morning fish auction.

Seasonal Highlights

Winter Fishing Season (October–March)

The post-monsoon fishing season brings the largest trawler fleets to Shankarpur. Dawn walks along the beach reveal scores of returning boats unloading catches — an extraordinary scene of coastal life with pelicans and fishing eagles circling overhead.

Makar Sankranti (January)

The festival of Makar Sankranti (January 14–15) sees fishing communities performing elaborate rituals at the sea's edge before venturing out for the new season's first major catch — a deeply rooted tradition along the entire Midnapore coast.

Did You Know?

Shankarpur is the only beach in the Digha–Mandarmani coastline where you can watch the traditional net-weaving by fisherwomen on the beach itself. These handwoven nets — crafted using a technique passed down through generations — are still used in active fishing and take up to two weeks to complete. It is one of the last living examples of traditional fishing craft in Bengal.
