Bakkhali

The Sundarbans Coast — Where the Delta Meets the Sea

Bakkhali is a quiet beach resort town in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, located 130 km south of Kolkata on the Bay of Bengal. Sitting at the edge of the Sundarbans delta, it offers a unique combination of beach, river estuary, and mangrove ecology. The adjacent Henry's Island — a short boat ride away — is a protected forest with spotted deer and crocodiles, giving Bakkhali a rare wildlife-plus-beach character.

About Bakkhali

Gateway to the Sundarbans

Bakkhali sits at the southernmost accessible edge of the Sundarbans delta — the world's largest mangrove forest. The beach at Bakkhali is shaped by the constant interplay of the Muriganga River and Bay of Bengal tidal currents, creating a dynamic, ever-shifting shoreline.

Henry's Island – Wildlife Sanctuary

A 5-minute boat ride from Bakkhali leads to Henry's Island — a 6 sq km protected forest island with spotted deer, fishing cats, saltwater crocodiles, and over 100 bird species. The island was named after the British officer Henry Beveridge and is managed by the West Bengal Forest Department.

Fraserganj Fishing Harbour

Adjacent to Bakkhali lies Fraserganj, one of West Bengal's largest mechanised fishing harbours. Named after the British administrator James Stuart Fraser, it handles the daily catch of hundreds of trawlers operating in the Bay of Bengal — an active, atmospheric fishing port scene.

Wildlife & Nature

The Bakkhali–Henry's Island coastline is an important nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles (November–February). The mangrove estuaries near the beach are rich in mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and kingfishers. The beach itself hosts large flocks of migratory waders in winter — making it an excellent destination for birdwatching alongside the standard beach experience.

Festivals & Events

Ganga Sagar Mela Transit (January)

During the Gangasagar Mela (Makar Sankranti), thousands of pilgrims pass through Bakkhali en route to Sagar Island. The town becomes a major transit camp for pilgrims during this period, with a festive atmosphere and heavy river ferry traffic.

Turtle Nesting Season (November–February)

The Forest Department conducts guided turtle nesting watch programmes at Bakkhali beach during winter. These conservation-tourism events allow visitors to observe Olive Ridley turtles coming ashore at night — a rare and deeply moving experience.

Did You Know?

The beach at Bakkhali experiences some of the most extreme tides on the Bengal coast — the sea can recede over 700 metres at low tide, exposing vast mudflats teeming with crabs, shellfish, and coastal birds. This dramatic tidal change occurs twice daily and transforms the beach landscape completely, giving Bakkhali two entirely different visual identities within a single day.
