History
The First Sermon
Around 528 BCE, the Buddha delivered the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta to his five former companions at this deer park. This foundational sermon outlined the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, establishing the core framework of Buddhist philosophy.
Ashokan Stupas
Emperor Ashoka erected immense structures here in the 3rd century BCE to mark the site's holiness. The massive cylindrical Dhamek Stupa, standing at 43.6 meters tall and 28 meters in diameter, marks the exact spot where the first sermon was delivered.
The Lion Capital
Ashoka also erected a polished sandstone pillar featuring four Asiatic lions standing back to back. This capital survived the site's later destruction and was adopted as the official National Emblem of India following independence in 1947.
