Chopta

The Pristine 'Mini Switzerland' of Uttarakhand

Situated at an elevation of 2,680 meters (8,790 ft) in the Rudraprayag district, Chopta is an unspoiled natural haven often fondly referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand'. Surrounded by dense pine, deodar, and rhododendron forests and rolling alpine meadows (bugyals), it remains largely uncommercialized. Chopta serves as the picturesque base camp for the famous trek to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple) and Chandrashila peak.

Natural Heritage

Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary

Chopta is a vital part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Its dense forests are rich in biodiversity and serve as a protected habitat for rare Himalayan flora and fauna, maintaining the ecological balance of the region.

A Trekker's Basecamp

While Chopta doesn't have grand historical monuments of its own, it has been the historical starting point for Hindu pilgrims and modern trekkers ascending to the ancient Tungnath Temple and the Chandrashila summit for centuries.

Uncommercialized Beauty

Unlike heavily commercialized hill stations like Mussoorie or Nainital, Chopta has deliberately been kept free of massive concrete developments, preserving its pristine, off-the-grid charm.

The Wildlife Experience

The undisturbed forests around Chopta are a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. It is home to over 240 species of birds, including the spectacularly colorful Himalayan Monal (the state bird). If lucky, visitors might also spot musk deer and snow leopards in the higher reaches during winter.

Things to Do and See

Tungnath & Chandrashila Trek

This is the primary reason people visit Chopta. The 4 km trek to Tungnath is relatively easy, passing through magnificent forests. From Tungnath, a further 1.5 km steep climb takes you to Chandrashila for a 360-degree Himalayan panorama.

Camping under the Stars

Pitching a tent in the lush green bugyals (meadows) of Chopta is an incredible experience. The lack of light pollution makes it one of the best spots in Uttarakhand for stargazing and astrophotography.

Deoria Tal Trek

Located near Sari village (a short drive from Chopta), a 3 km trek leads to the serene Deoria Tal lake. On a clear day, the mirror-like waters of the lake perfectly reflect the majestic Chaukhamba peaks.
