Pelling

West Sikkim's Kanchenjunga Viewpoint — Mountains, Monasteries & Misty Valleys

Pelling is a hill station in West Sikkim at 2,150 m, celebrated for its unobstructed close-range views of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Located ~115 km from Gangtok, it is the base for exploring Pemayangtse Monastery, the Rabdentse ruins, and the sacred Khecheopalri Lake — making it West Sikkim's most complete travel destination.

A Glimpse into the History of Pelling

Origins as a Hamlet

Pelling was originally a quiet Sikkimese hamlet scattered around the ridge west of Gyalshing (Geyzing). Its strategic ridge position — directly facing Kanchenjunga — made it a lookout point for local monasteries and a resting place for pilgrims travelling to Pemayangtse Monastery just 2 km away.

Tourism Development (1980s–2000s)

Pelling's rise as a tourist destination began after Sikkim opened to Indian tourists in the early 1980s. The Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation built the first government hotels here, and steady trekking routes to Yuksom and Kanchenjunga Base Camp cemented its reputation as West Sikkim's premier hill station.

Skywalk & Modern Era

In 2019, Sikkim opened a glass-floored skywalk at Pelling as part of a ₹200 crore tourism infrastructure project. The skywalk, hanging bridge, and Rinchenpong viewpoints now attract a new generation of travellers beyond the traditional trek-and-monastery circuit.

Significance of Pelling

Pelling offers the closest unobstructed views of Kanchenjunga of any accessible hill station in Sikkim — the peak fills the horizon from most hotels. The town anchors the heritage triangle of Pemayangtse Monastery (2 km), Rabdentse ruins (3 km — former capital of Sikkim), and the sacred Khecheopalri Lake (34 km), making it a convergence point of natural, historical, and spiritual Sikkim.

Festivals of Pelling

Pemayangtse Cham Dance (Losar)

During Losar (Tibetan New Year, February), Pemayangtse Monastery hosts elaborate Cham mask dances performed by monks in full ritual costume. Visitors from across Sikkim and international travellers gather on the monastery courtyard for this annual spectacle unique to the Nyingma tradition.

Tendong Lho Rum Faat

Celebrated in August by the Lepcha community, this festival honours Mount Tendong — the sacred peak that, according to legend, saved the Lepchas from a great flood. Lepchas from across West Sikkim gather near Pelling for prayers, traditional dances, and community feasting.

Did You Know?

From Pelling's Upper Pelling viewpoint, Kanchenjunga appears so close that travellers often describe it as a "wall of snow" rather than a distant peak. On clear mornings, the mountain appears to glow gold at sunrise before the clouds roll in by 9 AM — making an early wake-up non-negotiable for the perfect shot. Pelling also sits adjacent to the Rabdentse ruins, the second capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim (1670–1814).
