Lachen

North Sikkim's Remote Alpine Village — Gateway to Gurudongmar Lake at 2,750 Metres

Lachen is a traditional Bhutia village in North Sikkim at 2,750 m, serving as the base for day visits to Gurudongmar Lake (5,430 m) — one of the world's highest freshwater lakes and a sacred site for Sikhs and Buddhists alike. Governed by the ancient Dzumsa community council, Lachen preserves a self-regulating village democracy unchanged for centuries.

A Glimpse into the History of Lachen

Bhutia Settlement & Dzumsa

Lachen's Bhutia community migrated from Tibet across the Sikkim Himalayas centuries ago, establishing a village governed by the Dzumsa — an elected council of headmen (Pipons) managing land rights, trade, and justice. This system predates Indian statehood and operates parallel to the modern Indian administration to this day.

British Exploration Base

In the 19th century, British botanist and explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker used Lachen as his base camp while documenting Sikkim's flora for the Kew Gardens herbarium (1848–49). His records of rhododendrons, orchids, and unknown plant species from the Lachen valley contributed substantially to global botanical knowledge.

Tourism Gateway (1990s)

After North Sikkim opened to permitted tourism in the 1990s, Lachen became the essential overnight halt between Gangtok and Gurudongmar Lake. The government improved road infrastructure along the Lachen Chu river valley, and guesthouses run by Dzumsa families expanded rapidly to accommodate the annual tourist influx.

Significance of Lachen

Lachen is the only practical overnight base before Gurudongmar Lake — the early morning departure (4–5 AM) required to reach the lake at sunrise makes staying in Lachen non-negotiable. The village's Lachen Monastery (Nyingma school) and the unique Dzumsa governance system make it a cultural destination in its own right, beyond its role as a logistical waypoint.

Festivals at Lachen

Losar (Tibetan New Year)

Lachen celebrates Losar in January–February with monastery prayers, butter-lamp offerings, and Cham mask dances specific to the Nyingma lineage of Lachen Monastery. The Dzumsa organises communal feasting and traditional archery competitions unique to Bhutia heritage in this part of North Sikkim.

Pang Lhabsol

Celebrated in August–September, Pang Lhabsol honours Kanchenjunga as the guardian deity of Sikkim. Lachen's Bhutia community performs warrior dances in full armour — re-enacting the pact between the Lepchas and Bhutias who swore brotherhood in Kanchenjunga's name — a tradition maintained unbroken for over 300 years.

Did You Know?

Joseph Dalton Hooker, during his 1848 Lachen expedition, collected the specimens that led to the discovery of 25 new rhododendron species — seven of which now bear "Sikkimensis" in their scientific names. His landmark work "Rhododendrons of the Sikkim Himalaya" (1849), illustrated from the Lachen valley specimens, directly sparked the global Victorian rhododendron cultivation craze which transformed British gardens.
