Situated centrally on the old banks of the Sutlej River at 30.9010° N, 75.8573° E, Ludhiana is the absolute largest city in Punjab. While famous globally as a massive industrial manufacturing center producing the majority of India's woolens, hosiery, and bicycles, underneath the factories lies a city steeped deeply in Lodi dynasty history, spectacular rural museums, and some of the richest Punjabi street food culture anywhere in the world.

Heritage & History
The Lodhi Connection
The city was powerfully established in 1480 by members of the ruling Lodhi dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate (specifically Nihal Lodhi and Yusuf Lodhi). The city's name is literally a corruption of 'Lodhi-ana', meaning the town of the Lodhis. The massive, aging Lodhi Fort (Purana Qila), commissioned by Sikandar Lodhi, still stands in ruins near the banks of the Sutlej, serving as a silent reminder of its medieval founding.
The Global Textile Giant
Following India's independence, Ludhiana rapidly transformed. Today, it overwhelmingly produces the lion's share of India's winter wear. The massive chaotic lanes of the Chaura Bazaar and Mochpura Bazar are completely legendary for wholesale trading of everything from incredibly fine cashmere sweaters to specialized auto-parts, exporting globally to Europe and North America.
The Museum of Rural Life
Tucked within the massive campus of the Punjab Agricultural University is the extraordinary Museum of Rural Life of Punjab. Unlike traditional museums focused on kings and wars, this space is incredibly dedicated to painstakingly preserving the disappearing rural culture of the region. It vividly showcases authentic old agrarian tools, spinning wheels, wildly colorful traditional phulkari embroidery sets, and replicas of traditional mud-house kitchens.
Did You Know?
Ludhiana manufactures more than 50% of all the bicycles completely produced in India. Major mega-brands like Hero Cycles have their massive foundational manufacturing plants operating right within the city's industrial sectors.
