Legendary Origins
The name literally translates to "Five Caves," originating from a local myth that the five Pandava brothers built the central caves during their epic 13-year exile.
Evolution
It remained an obscure tribal settlement until Captain James Forsyth of the British Army officially "discovered" the plateau in 1857 while leading troops towards Jhansi.
Modern Era
The British quickly established it as a cantonment and sanatorium due to the cool climate. Today, a large portion is protected under the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve.
Significance
Pachmarhi acts as a crucial biodiversity hotspot merging the flora of the Himalayas and the lower Western Ghats. It houses ancient rock shelters containing paintings estimated to be over 10,000 years old.
