Chail

The Maharaja's Mountain Retreat — World's Highest Cricket Ground & Royal Palace at 2,250 m

Chail is a quiet hill resort in Solan District, Himachal Pradesh, at 2,250 m — 45 km from Shimla in the Shivalik Hills. Built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1891 after Lord Kitchener banished him from Shimla, Chail houses the Chail Palace (now a heritage hotel), the world's highest cricket pitch at 2,444 m, and dense pine and rhododendron forests.

A Glimpse into History

Origins – Maharaja's Exile Capital (1891)

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala was banned from entering Shimla by Commander-in-Chief Lord Kitchener after a social dispute. In retaliation, the Maharaja levelled three hilltops in the Shivalik range and built an elaborate summer palace at Chail — declaring it his personal summer capital, grander than Shimla's Viceregal Lodge.

Evolution – The Cricket Ground (1893)

To rival Shimla's famous Annandale cricket ground, the Maharaja levelled the Chail hill summit at 2,444 m and created a cricket pitch in 1893. It remains the highest cricket ground in the world and is still used today. Adjacent polo grounds were also built — now the site of the Chail Military School.

Modern Era – Heritage Hotel & Army School

After India's independence, the Chail Palace was taken over by the HP government and converted into a heritage hotel run by HP Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC). The Chail Military School occupies the original palace grounds and polo fields. The cricket ground remains open to visitors as a heritage site.

Significance

Chail's cricket ground at 2,444 m (8,018 ft) holds the Guinness World Record as the world's highest cricket pitch — beating Dharamshala HPCA by nearly 1,000 m. The Chail Palace's main building sits at 2,250 m and retains original Patiala royal furniture and décor. Kali Tibba (2,600 m), a 4 km trek above Chail, is the highest accessible peak in the Shivalik range with views of Shimla, Kasauli, and the Sutlej Valley.

Festivals & Events

Chail Heritage Weekend (May)

HP Tourism runs a heritage weekend at the Chail Palace Hotel in May — heritage walk through the royal grounds, folk performances, photography tours of the cricket ground and palace, and local Himachali food exhibitions. Accommodation sells out weeks in advance during this event.

Shivratri at Kali Tibba (February–March)

The Kali Tibba temple above Chail draws pilgrims for Shivratri — a significant mountain shrine festival where devotees trek 4 km uphill in winter conditions. The event offers a unique combination of religious pilgrimage and high-altitude trekking in the Shivalik forest.

Did You Know?

Chail's cricket ground was levelled by the Maharaja's workers using elephant-drawn earthmoving equipment in 1893 — no mechanical tools existed at the time. The outfield grass is maintained year-round by the Chail Military School cadets, who mow it manually by hand. The pitch was last used for a competitive match in 2019 by Himachal Pradesh veterans teams.

Tips for Visitors

Stay at HPTDC Chail Palace for the full royal experience — rates are government-fixed (₹3,500–7,000/night) and the timber-panelled heritage rooms are original 1891 structures.
The Kali Tibba trail (4 km) starts from behind the palace and is unmarked — hire a local guide or take the forest department map from the HPTDC reception before setting out.
The Shimla–Kufri–Chail road is narrow with sharp hairpin bends and no guardrail in places — drive in daylight only; avoid the road in monsoon after evening thunderstorms.
Mobile signals are weak in Chail — Airtel and Jio have partial 4G at the palace area; the upper forest walk to Kali Tibba has no signal for the entire 4 km. Download offline maps before you go.
